Conserve energy every day:
- Set water heater temperature at 120 degrees. This will allow a family to cut water heating bills without sacrificing comfort.
- Install water-flow restrictors in showerheads and faucets.
- Run washing machines and clothes dryers with a full load.
- Replace aging appliances with new high-efficiency equipment, if possible. When buying new appliances, compare energy efficiency ratings and annual operating costs.
Here are some easy energy conservation tips that can save you money this heating season:
- Seal any opening to the outside that may let cold air in.
- Purchase a hot water heater blanket to further insulate your hot water heater.
- Install a programmable thermostat. Set it at 68 degrees during the day and lower in the evening or when no one is at home.
- Clean or replace furnace filters at least once a month.
- Clean warm-air registers, baseboard heaters and radiators as needed; make sure they're not blocked by furniture, carpeting or drapes.
- Bleed trapped air from hot water radiators once or twice a season.
- Place heat-resistant radiator reflectors between the radiator and exterior walls.
- Keep draperies and shades on your south-facing windows open during the day so the sun can heat your home.
- Purchase energy-efficient products when you buy new heating equipment. Your contractor should be able to give you energy fact sheets for different types, models and designs to help you compare energy usage.
- Close fireplace dampers, vents and doors in unused rooms.
